Name
Breakout Session: How Should We Tell the American Story?
Date & Time
Monday, May 18, 2026, 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM
Beverly Gage Allen Guelzo
Description

This session features award-winning historians Beverly Gage and Allen Guelzo reflecting on a vital and timely question: How should we tell the American story? The scholars will each answer the question with a brief talk and then have an unmoderated conversation between them, followed by Q and A with the audience.

Gage will draw on her new book, This Land Is Your Land, which explores that question through a cross-country road trip spotlighting unforgettable places and pivotal moments in American history. At a time when American education has shifted away from forming citizens, Guelzo will offer reflections on how Americans might study, appreciate, and tell their story in this semiquincentennial year. Together, these perspectives—and the dialogue between them—remind us that Americans have inherited a history of real greatness, a story worth telling, and a civic inheritance that demands thoughtful citizenship.
